Call for papers

Historians and all scholars with interests relevant to the conference theme are invited to propose papers for the conference on the history of work and education to be held at the University of Sydney 8-11 December, 2008. This conference is international in scope being a joint conference of the History of Education societies of Australia and New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.
Conference Themes
The conference themes are as follows. Please write your proposal to address some aspect of one or more of these themes:
- The WORK of children and young people associated with the processes of education. The curriculum, intended or otherwise, may be an element of this sub-theme.
- WORK and play as dualities; the work of creating, the work of arts education and play in the work of children.
- The WORK and careers of teachers and administrators of education; and other people employed in educational institutions.
- The WORK of mothers, fathers and families generally in managing the schooling of their children.
- Preparing the young person for WORK: vocational education and the history of education.
- The WORK of teaching the young across colonial and national boundaries.
- Unpaid, and volunteer WORK by women, men and children in education.
- The WORK of historians of education: writing the history of education, including research, research methods and historiography.
Submitting a Paper Proposal
Proposals should be about 300 (±50) words long and contain the following information:
- Name of proposer
- Institution of proposer where appropriate
- Email address of proposer
- Mailing address of proposer
- Title of proposed paper
- Paper proposal (about 300 words)

A Picture and a Thousand Words
There will be two sessions in the conference program titled "A Picture and a Thousand Words". Historians and all scholars with interests relevant to the conference theme are invited to propose papers of a thousand words relating to a particular image. The image should be projectable (overhead, power point etc.) and the paper read to the session. (This takes about 7-8 minutes.) Papers may be more or less theorised, but need to be related to the conference theme.) Presenters of papers in the main program are very welcome to submit a proposal for this session also.
Submitting a Picture in 1,000 words Proposal
Proposals should be about 150 (±50) words long and contain the following information:
- Name of proposer
- Institution of proposer where appropriate
- Email address of proposer
- Mailing address of proposer
- Title of proposed paper/image
- Required means of image projection
- Paper proposal (about 150 words)

Reviewing process
The reviewing panel will operate on a "rolling basis". You can expect to hear whether you proposal has been accepted within four to five weeks of its submission.
Proposers of papers are requested to bring copies of their full papers to the conference for circulation at the session of presentation.
Publishing opportunity after the conference
SPECIAL ISSUE OF HISTORY OF EDUCATION REVIEWThere will be a special issue published of the History of Education Review devoted to papers given at the joint HES/ANZHES conference. Full papers for this special issue need to be submitted to Tim Allender (by email and attachment) no later than February 15, 2009 for refereeing.
