Getting around
From the airport, a taxi will get you to Newtown/University of Sydney for about AUD20 or a little more. You can also catch the train into Central from either International (T1) or Domestic airport terminals (T2 & T3), and then transfer to the Inner West Line for Newtown. Tickets are reasonably expensive, and it is probably advisable to take a taxi for such a short distance from the airport to your accommodation if it is near the conference venue, and especially if you have luggage.
From the conference venue there are multiple public transport facilities.
Taxis
Taxis are always cruising nearby King Street looking for customers. If you wish to book a taxi, Legion taxis are recommended (ph. 131 451).
Trains
A little further south along King Street is the Newtown Railway Station. Trains from here run every 20-30 minutes, taking you directly to Central (into or through which all suburban, inter-urban and interstate rail runs), the city, or down to Circular Quay. CityRail has a web-site with maps and timetables:
Buses
Buses (422, 423, 426, and 428) run every few minutes along King Street towards Central Railway Station and then past China Town, Town Hall and the central business district, and usually on to Circular Quay (check sign on front of bus).
From the city, along the east side of George Street, the following bus routes will take you to Newtown and the site of the conference: 422, 423, 426, and 428. The most economical way of buying bus tickets is to get “Travel 10” tickets which give you ten rides at a reduced price. These are usually available for purchase from newsagents. Sydney buses has its own web-site with maps and timetables:
All the big hire car companies are represented at the airport and at various places in Sydney. Be warned however that around Newtown and Sydney University parking is often difficult and expensive. If you can make do with public transport during the period of the conference and your time in Sydney, this is advised. Otherwise check with your accommodation on any rights to parking that you may have.
