Uni-in-a-Day 2008

On 18 September 2008, students from years four, five, six and their teachers from Glebe Public school took part in the Uni in a Day program at the University of Sydney. This is the second year that Glebe CDP has organised this event in conjunction with the Sydney School of Education and Social Work.

The children took part in several activities during the day. Firstly, they received a Welcome in the Main Quadrangle by Dr Loughland in full academic dress, which reminded many of the students of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from the Harry Potter movies. The children then visited the Veterinary Science Animal Hospital where they visited the sick and injured animals helped by the clinic. Next stop was a visit to the Koori Centre where the children found out about the different ways the University supports indigenous students to continue their education and also about the different pathways people can take to University. The students then took part in the Creative Arts Workshops which were run by University of Sydney Education students. Year six took part in the Drama Workshop and years four and five got to show off their dance moves in the dance workshop.

During the BBQ lunch put on by Edsoc, the students were treated to a display from Sursoc (the clowning around society), and it was here that we discovered that many of the students from Glebe Public School had hidden clowning talents! Last stop for the day was the Human Movement workshop where the kids got to play team sports including soccer.

The day was a great success thanks to the energy and enthusiasm of all the University of Sydney staff and students who participated. A special thank you to Laura Dalton (University of Sydney Social Work student) Glebe Schools Community Centre and Michelle Sawilejskij (University of Sydney Social Work student) Glebe Youth Centre who helped organise the day.
